- Take out your introduction outline sheet from Friday, partner up with another student in the class, and workshop each other's introductions
- The checklist for the workshop – check to make sure that your partner's introduction has the following:
a. Hook: A general statement that connects to the topic, but does not mention the book or any characters from the book. The hook is general, but powerful (draws readers in). It is not a bland or obvious statement, it is not a question, a quote, a dictionary definition, or a cliché. It is some kind of anecdote, example, surprising fact or statistic, strong statement, etc.
b. Necessary Background Information: The book's title and author are introduced, any characters mentioned in the thesis are introduced, and there is the necessary information that helps readers understand anything that will come up in the essay.
c. Thesis: At the end of the intro, there is a sentence that contains a strong, logical claim (that directly answers the question the prompt asks) with proper, valid reasoning (that is relevant to and directly proves the claim).
d. Overall Flow: Each sentence in the introduction should flow into the next one (each sentence should build off the one before it) so that it properly BRIDGES readers into the body paragraphs.
