5/3/17
1. Review of Chapter 5-6/Lit Circle Recap (Slide #21)--Notes from discussion are below
- Dill and Jem distancing selves from Scout--social construct of gender...we see something difference and assign a stigma to it, leading to social construct. We're born seeing differences because we're not blind, but we're not born with an assigned meaning to those differences. That is taught to us (like in "The Sneetches"). Jem and Dill are getting older (and living in the south in the 30s), so they're starting to see Scout as a girl (hence why they exclude her)--Recap: what did your lit circle talk about yesterday in regards to how Scout feels about being a girl and why? (She never saw a problem with being a girl until Jem said it with a negative connotation...that's where the feeling of inferiority came from)
- So she finds solace with Miss Maudie...tell me about her? What's the difference between her and Miss Stephanie? What is the difference in how Miss Stephanie talks about Boo Radley verses how Miss Maudie talks about Boo Radley. Does what she tell us about the Radley's religious practices make sense as to why Boo was locked up in his house?
- In Lit Circles, re-talk about the Boo Radley question...predict. Why would someone who is between the ages of 28-34 not ever come out of his house? Did Mr. Radley take Boo's punishment too far? Does he even exist anymore? Miss Maudie said he's alive, but that doesn't mean he never left the house for good (each lit circle share predictions)
- The kids keep bothering Boo, and finally, Atticus gives good advice to Jem that they need to stop tormenting the Radleys because "What Mr. Radley did might seem peculiar to us, but it did not seem peculiar to him. So they are learning "empathy." Empathy is what made me throw this book against the wall in 8th grade...if you ever cried during a movie or felt pain when your loved one was feeling hurt, that's empathy...putting yourself in someone's shoes and experiencing what they experience (this creates understanding and is an IMPORTANT lesson that Scout keeps hearing--maybe because she'll need it later??)
- Brings us to last point...Atticus gives them advice all the time; do you suppose this is why Scout and Jem call their father Atticus? (It's about intellectual equals...you call me Ms. Nafso now because there's a hierarchy--teacher and student--but when you graduate, you might call me Val because the gap of hierarchy is closing and we are becoming intellectual equals. If one of my old students, who I now work, called me Ms. Nafso, I would correct him to "Val" because him calling me that makes it seem like I'm still "above" him. Atticus treats Scout and Jem as intellectual equals...it was never about authority or "I'm the head of the house"...he treated them as equals always (it's why they're so mature)
- Talk about main event in Chapter 6 with the pants!
2. Summarize Chapter 7 (Slide #23)
Note: We will be summarizing Chapters 7-14 (Roller Coaster Analogy...it takes forever to get up and it can sometimes be a rough ride up like the Magnum at Cedar Point, but I'm going to make it a smooth ride up like the Millennium Force...when we're done summarizing, I will leave you close to the top of the hill, where you are excited for the climax coming up...after that, it's all the hills, twists, turns, etc. (so chapters after that won't be skipped).
